This school district peanut butter candy is one of our favorite classic treats. This recipe is simple with only 5 ingredients but results in a creamy, sweet and delicious treat that everyone will love.
This old-fashioned recipe is so easy to make, your kids can help too! It’s quick and easy to whip up and you can even speed up the process by popping the pan in the fridge for the chocolate topping to set a little quicker. Then slice it up and enjoy!
I love how some foods are like time travel in that when you take that first bite, those familiar flavors can transport you to a time in your life that brought joy. For me, these bars take me right back to elementary school where we enjoyed these delicious little snacks at lunch time!
This fun recipe was purchased for $1.00 at a garage sale from a retired lunch lady. It is so fun to be able to share this recipe with you today, and I do so in hopes that you’ll be able to make it with and for your family or a friend to enjoy. I think a box of these would make such a fun teacher appreciation gift, too!
Tips for making School District Peanut Butter Candy:
- Use fresh butter. Sounds funny, but it really makes a difference! Use a fresh cold stick instead of one that’s been sitting out on the counter.
- Use parchment paper to line the pan. It helps so much in making the slicing process easier. I use THESE for all of my baking.
- Set pan in the fridge to speed up the process for the chocolate setting. Otherwise it will take a while for the chocolate to set.
- Cover and store in a ziplock or other air tight container to keep them fresh!
- For converting this recipe to Gluten Free, simply substitute the graham cracker crumbs for GF rice krispies or GF graham cracker crumbs or omit the crumbs or Krispies all together! (Pamela’s Honey Grahams or S’moreables are 2 GF options that are good).

- 1/2 cup PLUS 2 Tablespoons Plain or crunchy peanut butter

- 3/4 cup milk chocolate chips semi-sweet can also be used
Instructions
- Melt the butter and whisk in peanut butter.Add powdered sugar and mix until incorporated.Add in graham cracker crumbs. Press peanut butter "dough" into an 8×8 pan (I like to line mine with parchment paper so I can lift the dessert out to cut once its set).Heat chocolate chips in the microwave. Stir every 30 seconds to avoid seizing. Once smooth, spread chocolate on the top of the peanut butter mixture. Allow to set and dry. I like to put it in the fridge to speed up the process if I am in a hurry. Slice into squares and enjoy!*SEE NOTE for Gluten Free option

*UPDATE* I used this recipe to make Valentine hearts and they turned out so fun and cute!
Instead of adding the candy to a pan, I simply rolled the bottom portion to my desired thickness on a parchment sheet. I then topped it with the chocolate and let it set and chill. Then I used a small heart cookie cutter to cut out pieces. I loved adding them to a little treat box to share with friends, teachers, neighbors or family!
