In today’s post I’ll be sharing all about adding rustic faux beams in the living room. I was absolutely thrilled to work with Ornamental Moulding, a Novo Building Products Company on this DIY project.
Adding rustic faux beams to the living room: The before
As you can see, our living room space where we watch TV together was lacking warmth. While I do love decorating with neutrals, I found our big white ceiling to be cold and stark in a room that I wanted to feel welcoming and cozy. This is a space we pile up as a family to watch movies or gather to visit with friends.
I’m so grateful for the opportunity we had to work with Ornamental Moulding to add some faux beams to this space! My home reflects a cottage/farmhouse aesthetic and I knew these beams would add texture, visual interest and a welcoming feeling in to living room while still complimenting our style. We chose the rustic maple faux beams in the 5×3 size.
InstalLation
Hanging these beams is a two person job and my husband needed me right by his side the whole time. Before hanging anything, we started by carefully marking chalk lines to measure and make sure we liked the placement and spacing of the beams.
Shaun screwed in the anchor boards that hold the faux beams. We carefully measured, cut and fit the beam shell pieces together. We then placed the shell of the beam over the anchor boards and screwed them in place. While this processes sounds fairly quick and easy, it does take two, lots of attention to detail, and some lifting and holding in place to make it work.
To stain or not to stain
I had THE HARDEST TIME trying to decide what color I wanted the beams. Ornamental Moulding offers these raw maple faux beams (in two sizes) or a prestained gray faux beam that is also beautiful.
After going back and forth and testing several stains out, we decided that we actually really loved the look of the raw wood and how it ties in so well with our white oak flooring. The wood adds such warmth to this room and I have fallen completely in love with how special this space feels with them hung!
Where the seams met, there were small separation lines so Shaun added some plastic wood to fill them in. It really gave the beams such a nice, seamless look. You can order them with a bracket to cover the seam if you like.
I also added a new chair, cozy throw, reading table, and rug to this space. I love how the warm touches of gold in the rug tie in with the warmth of the beams. You can shop these items below:
Adding texture and warmth
If you have a space in your home you think needs a little special attention, I highly recommend adding some rustic faux beams from Ornimental Moulding. I am already dreaming of adding more to our bedroom and even our music room space. I love the texture they have, they’re even more beautiful as you see them up close!
