One of the biggest requests I get, is to share our favorite family recipe for these quick and easy homemade breadsticks. I absolutely love making these for my family, they pair well with soups like our favorite Garden Minestrone.

Today I want to share a step-by-step video for you so you can have success with making a batch of your own! I love whenever my baked goodies bring my family to gather at the table. The kid’s devour these breadsticks while they’re still hot, right out of the oven. I have also made them to share with friends and delivered them warm. There are few things that say “I love you!” like warm bread, am I wrong?
If you are new to bread-making, don’t be afraid to try this! It’s a great beginners recipe and can totally be made without a mixer (just be sure to knead the dough until smooth and elastic!). Another tip is to always give the dough time to rise/develop glutens. It’s worth not rushing it, trust me! These steps allow for the bread to result in a chewy and soft texture.
If yeast intimidates you, you might enjoy this post on how to get bread yeast right every time!

Easy steps for homemade breadsticks
- Mix yeast, warm water and a pinch of sugar and allow yeast to foam/activate.
- Add flour and salt, and mix until combined. Switch to dough hook and allow the hook to knead dough until it is smooth and elastic.
- Remove dough from bowl and place on a lightly floured counter. Cover with a flour sack towel (click below for my forever favorites!) and let rise for 10 minutes.
- Roll dough into a large square (dough will be about 1/4″ in thickness).
- Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic powder if desired. Plain is delicious too!
- Fold upper half of dough onto lower half. Use a pizza cutter to slice 1″ strips.
- Twist the breadstick slices and place onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (find my favorites here) or spray pans with non-stick cooking spray.
- Brush breadstick twists with remaining melted butter and sprinkle with kosher salt. Cover with your flour sack towel and allow to rise 20 minutes while the oven is preheating to 400. Bake for 20-25 minutes and enjoy warm with soup or any dinner!
- Extra breadsticks can be frozen in a sealed gallon Ziploc bag. Allow them to come to room temperature and then warm in the microwave.
