One of my favorite things to do during the holidays is make recipes that my grandmothers used to bake. I love candy-making during Christmastime and these old fashioned holiday butter mints are the easiest candy ever! They have simple ingredients and you can really flavor them any way you’d like! Today’s batch is pink peppermint, but my daughter and I have experimented with Pina colada, orange, cinnamon and cherry almond as well. Happy holiday baking, sweet friend!

What are Old Fashioned Holiday Butter Mints?
If you’ve never had an old fashioned butter mint you’re missing out! This nostalgic treat used to be very popular dating clear back to 1893! They’re made with simple ingredients like butter, powdered sugar, cream or half and half, a pinch of salt, vanilla and some flavoring. Extracts work fine but I feel they keep their best flavor when you use candy oils.
After mixing the ingredients, the butter mints can sit out overnight to slightly dry and harden. The mints still keep their creamy and velvety smooth center but it makes them a little easier to add to a bowl so they don’t stick together.
Old Fashioned Holiday Butter Mints
Ingredients
- 4 Cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 Stick Salted Butter 1/2 Cup/ 8 Tablespoons Room Temperature
- 1 Tablespoon Half and Half or Heavy Cream
- Pinch salt Less than 1/8 teaspoon
- 1/2 Teaspoon Peppermint extract OR 1/4 Peppermint candy oil
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 drop Gel coloring Optional
Instructions
- Add butter to a stand mixer bowl and beat it until it is very smooth.Add remaining ingredients and mix until smooth and well incorporated.Sprinkle a small amount of powdered sugar on your countertop and roll sections of the butter mint "dough" into rolls about the thickness of a string cheese. I like to cover my unused dough with a damp paper towel or a piece of plastic wrap so it doesn't dry. Slice butter mints in small pieces and allow them to set and dry overnight. Store mints in a ziplock bag in the fridge or in an airtight container. I love eating them chilled!

Whether you’re hosting Christmas dinner or attending someone else’s, I think these little butter mints would make the sweetest gift! Imagine if you were stressed trying to get things ready for a party and someone showed up with delicious butter mints to add to the table for your guests. What a fun gift for your hostess!
You could also package them in little baggies as favors at each place setting or to send with guests as they leave for the night. So cute, so simple, so nostalgic. These butter mints are so fast to whip up, they are no bake and only a few simple ingredients!
