Today I am thrilled to share with you my nostalgic Christmas home tour. I love decorating for the holidays, and this year was one of my favorites! My children are young and full of the spirit of Christmas. If you missed it, I shared all about my Christmas tree this year in this post.

Choosing a theme:
Just after Halloween, my youngest son Knox begged and begged to start decorating for Christmas. It didn’t take much convincing for me!
I will never forget hearing Judy Garland sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” as we unloaded bins. The words “let your heart be light” really struck me. This year has been tough and heavy and brought a lot of negativity. I loved the idea of basing my whole charismas theme around the words “let your heart be light”.
As I began decorating the mantel, I had an idea to carry the red over and fill my garland with ornaments. This was a super simple DIY and if you wanted to make it permanent you could definitely glue the bulbs together. I simply hung them with ornament hooks and tried to keep things symmetrical on both sides.
This year’s color scheme was a combination of cherry red, white, silver and blush pink. Our whole living room had a peppermint candy color vibe and it made me smile each time I walked into this space!
Tips for creating a cohesive décor theme:
- Choose coordinating wrapping paper. Adding a few faux gifts under the tree that are wrapped in paper that matches your ornaments really brings things together!
- Stick to 3 colors for a cohesive look. Sometimes it’s hard to choose what colors to use on a tree! I have found if I stick to 3 or less, things really come together. This year my main colors were red, blush and white. I did add in accents of silver and fresh greens.
- Don’t let holiday décor overwhelm you! Sometimes even just adding a few small things like a holiday towel in the bathroom can bring a simple touch of Christmas.
Adding small details:
I love decorating my hutch for the holidays. This year I decided to add small items mixed in with my white dishes. I like to collect small red items like little Christmas trucks, a nutcracker, candy canes, brush bottle trees, glass ornament trees and a little “letters to Santa” mailbox ornament.
As for my open kitchen shelves, I used my Putz houses and little fairy lights with brush bottle tree accents. This turned out to be such a fun little nightlight in our kitchen and made for a beautiful cozy winter scene.

In the dining room I put together a simple and fun tablescape full of the red, white, silver and blush accents. I was thrilled to work with World Market this year and had so much fun putting together place settings with their whimsical Santa napkins and wood chargers.
In our entryway, I used a small tree decorated in Santa ornaments. For an inexpensive DIY, I wrapped some small pantry boxes (like Jell-O, rice and pudding) to make a little vignette of pretty boxes with ribbon.
The mudroom got a little touch of Christmas this year too! Adding a pop of red was a really fun way to brighten our mudroom for the holidays. We added a fun advent calendar for the kids to countdown to Christmas each day!
Thank you for touring our home for Christmas! I hope you found some fun ideas for making your décor fun and lighthearted for Christmas too.
