Prioritizing rest and mental wind down
One of my goals this year is to FINALLY prioritize making our bedroom a welcoming place of rest and relaxation INSTEAD of a drop zone for things like laundry, kids toys, and items that need organized. When I have a space that feels de-cluttered and tidy, it becomes a great place for me to find mental rest, as well as a place where my husband and I can chat about our day without distraction.
I was over the moon excited when I discovered this beautiful microfiber quilted coverlet on Amazon, only $43 for a king size + two big shams! What a deal. If you are a hot sleeper, this quilt is perfectly lightweight and soft. It comes in a few different colors, too, I purchased the beige but I also love the white.
I plan to get a larger piece of art for above our bed, but I am so in love with this oil painted floral print (barn wood frame from Hobby Lobby). I love the details and neutral colors. You can shop some of my very favorite art below. P.s., our wall color is Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, lightened 50%.

This winter season I have really felt pulled toward using some warmer tones in my home. I have been especially drawn to taupes and different shades of mocha, ivory and even some dark greens. I’ve been slowly adding these colors to our bedroom and it really feels so cozy welcoming to me! I found these taupe curtains at IKEA but I will link some other favorites below. The sheer white inner curtains are these.
You may have noticed that I changed out our beautiful braided ivory rug. Sadly this was not by choice, but rather by force after one of our kids had a very unfortunate case of stomach flu. I will spare you all of the delightful details of my daughter coming to get me, but let’s just say the rug did not stand a chance and that very night (actually, 3:00 am) we had to get rid of it!
I was lucky to have this large Ruggable area rug on hand to swap out in our bedroom. While I do love the pattern and color of this rug, I will probably keep checking for something with some pile to it. This rug works perfectly on our wood floors or down in our basement, and bonus, it is washable! Maybe I should keep it in here for future barf incidents… haha.

We were absolutely thrilled when RC Willey sent us this stunning floor mirror. It has added so much brightness to our bedroom and it was perfect fit for this wall that I didn’t want to overcrowd with decor. I love how mirrors instantly expand a space and almost feel like another window!

I love mixing neutral patterns and had so much fun incorporating this block print quilt, some striped pillows, quilted coverlet and fringe lumbar pillow. Each adds a cozy texture, visual interest with patterns, and a soft, welcoming bed that makes you excited to sink into at the end of a busy day. Prioritizing making this space restful and peaceful has been one of the best decisions I have made. If your room is cluttered and feels overwhelming to you, try these tips to improve it:
Tips for making your room a retreat vs a catch-all
- Clear clutter and piles
- Purchase totes or storage containers to store “extras” in an organized way under your bed.
- If you don’t have a window in your room, try hanging a mirror or adding a floor mirror.
- Refresh your bedding to something that feels soft, cozy, uplifting and inviting to you.
- If you have a computer or desk in your room, find another space for it! I feel really strongly that we should not have a workspace in the same room we sleep. I think it would be much too hard to mentally wind down and rest at the end of the day if you’re seeing a space where work needs done.
- Stop letting laundry build up in a pile in your room. I feel like a hypocrite saying this because usually all the laundry that needs folded ends up in here. But I am making it a very big goal to break this habit!
- Last of all, leave yourself something to look forward to in your room. Maybe its a book, a pair of slippers to slide on, a favorite show to watch, a magazine to look through, your favorite blanket or even a notebook so you can write down everything that’s in your mind (to-do’s that make it hard to fall asleep) so you can rest.
