Earlier last year when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, I felt an overwhelming need to focus on food storage and self-reliance. Building an emergency preparedness kit for home feels so important! I knew that if needed, we would be able to be “stuck at home” with plenty of food and essentials.
I spent time and money stocking up on non-perishables and filling the freezer.
Fast forward nearly one year later and we have now gone through all of that food storage. That’s a good thing! It shows me that what I stored was food we could use and would actually eat. I learned how long certain amounts would last for our family. It taught me brands that worked and others that didn’t.
Right now we are watching many families in Texas suffer though unexpected power outages. I again have felt so called to restore our emergency preparedness bins! I want to have a plan for being without power or water if needed.
Where to start:
Emergency preparedness can feel overwhelming because where do you cut it off? The internet offers so many options for so many survival situations. Today I purely want to focus on preparedness at home without water or power. Self reliance and preparedness brings peace and confidence!
I purchased this book after hearing it highly recommended and the reason I am excited to have it on hand is because even if you have nothing prepared for a crisis, this book will tell you what to do with what you do have. It would be a great resource in an emergency and I highly encourage you to have a hard copy in your home!
Each time we leave out of town without fail my husband or kids will ask “Mom, did you pack the…?” Lucky for them since I tend to over-pack and bring every last thing, I always have what they need. It gives me such a sense of pride to know I can take care of them! Being prepared in a bad situation is no different. I want to feel like I can take care of my family.
Thinking about having a plan for emergent situations brings a real peace of mind. The best thing that we can gift ourselves is the reassurance that we have a plan! What do we need to get by for a few days if we were to find ourselves without power?
I will be writing a series of 3 blog posts to cover storage for emergencies. Today I am so excited to show you what I ordered for one of my preparedness kits!

We love and use these mini toothbrushes and keep them in our vehicles. They clean your teeth even better than a toothbrush with NO WATER required. They would be the perfect thing to have on hand if you’re trying to conserve water.

One thing we really enjoyed as a family during the Covid-19 stay at home order was learning to watercolor paint! My kids and I started getting the supplies out to paint once a day. It is really therapeutic for your mind and so fun to have creative play! Check out this post to see how I learned the basics in just a week!
