In today’s post I am sharing a few cozy summertime deck decorating ideas that will inspire you to transform your deck or patio space into a fun and welcoming gathering place for memory-making all summer long.

This spring we fixed up our outdoor deck space that’s right off of our kitchen. I can’t believe how my family instantly became drawn to this space in the warm afternoons and evenings. I love catching a glimpse of the kids out the window playing a game or laughing and visiting together.
Today I want to share with you some of the elements and ideas we incorporated to make this space feel welcoming and cozy. We have been eating dinner as a family out here as much as possible! It’s been so much fun to look forward to gathering each evening. We just enjoyed these simple shrimp tacos outside a few nights ago!

Gather and relax
You might remember that last summer we had a table and chairs in this spot. We had a lot of fun using it for al fresco dining and visiting with family. As my kids have grown, though, they have really enjoyed inviting friends over for evening hang-outs and everyone always gathered on the other side of the deck where the loveseat and chairs were. I knew after a year that it would be better if we swapped out the table for more cozy seating.
Right after making this change, I instantly knew it was the right move for us. Not only were my kids able to have an inviting space for friends, I noticed that as sibling they wanted to spend time out here as well. We’ve started bringing our dinners out to enjoy when the weather is nice, and it has really become a space that has helped us bond and enjoy time together as a family.

Finishing the space with textures and colors
After finding a sectional that worked perfectly for this deck space, I knew I wanted to bring in some other elements to really make it feel complete and special. Since I planted a garden this year and spend a lot of time watering, I didn’t want to have to worry about keeping any flowers watered on the deck. I have also found that flowers in this space attract a lot of wasps, so going faux was a must!
These faux hydrangea blooms are from Balsam Hill and they are SO stunning, low maintenance and added a gorgeous color and texture to our outdoor space. I absolutely love them and I was able to get a discount code to share with you (EMILYSPRING50) if you’re wanting some, too!

Cozy Summertime Deck Decorating Ideas and elements
- Start with a great base, an outdoor rug! Rugs can really help to define a space and add texture, pattern and color. Start with something that is easy to maintain in weather, and decide if you want your base to be neutral or have the majority of color and pattern.
- Add furniture or elements you know YOU will use. How do you use your outdoor space? Do you need chairs for watching the sun come up and drinking your morning coffee or tea? Do you use the space primarily for al fresco dining? Do you have enough seating for friends and family if you invite them often? Will your children use the space more than you? Would you enjoy a small fire pit or just a table for games?
- Once you have the base pieces, like a rug or furniture, you can add in small accents to help the space feel cozy and complete. This is also a great way to add in some coordinating colors, patterns and textures. I like to add throw pillows, blankets, an outdoor umbrella (this makes our space feel super cozy!), flower pots or faux florals, cozy lighting, lanterns or lamps. Be sure to have a space for people to set their plates or drinks or even smaller items like phones so it’s comfortable for them to stay.
- Incorporate elements that make the space feel welcoming and comfortable for both daytime and night! We fell head over heels for these giant lanters, they add so much charm. I also love these small handheld lanterns which have 3 lighting colors and add a very cozy glow.

I found these darling stools that double as a perfect outdoor table for the sides of our outdoor sectional. These are metal so they do not easily tip and I LOVE the texture and style of them.

Cozy glowing lighting
These topiaries are cordless and run on batteries so they are perfect for any spot you could use them. I have the other set on my front porch and always get so many compliments on them. I love the tiny warm lights and how they just make you want to sit and visit and stay a while.
These giant antique metal lanterns are so beautiful, they really make a statement! They are bronze metal and add the perfect charm to our deck. The candles are faux flickering and compliment the topiaries for a comforting summer evening outside.

We are working on a way to hang these little outdoor lights over the whole deck. for now, we simply have them strung over the porch lights and they add a really iniviting feel.

These little hand held metal lanterns are really beautiful and there are a million ways you could use them! They have 3 light color settings and are rechargeable. They are perfect for outdoor dining when it starts to get dark, and we also love using them for our smore’s table when we have a fire.
