5-minute homemade playdough
Today I am so excited to share my very favorite 5-minute playdough recipe! This is the same recipe that my mom used to make for us growing up. Sure, anyone can run to the store to purchase playdough, but I love knowing exactly what ingredients are inside. This recipe is so fun to make with my little ones, they enjoy mixing the ingredients and choosing the colors!
5 reasons to make homemade playdough
- 5-minute playdough is a fun and easy DIY project to do with your kids!
- All of the ingredients in this easy recipe are items I always have on hand.
- When stored in a ziplock bag, this playdough can last for months!

Non-electronic activity
On busy days when I need to catch up, I love making this 5-minute playdough to keep my little guy busy so I’m not tempted to plop him in front of the TV. He always gets so excited when I hand him a pile of small cars or construction vehicles so he can create a little city. He ended up playing with this little city for 30 minutes that day!
Sensory play
I love sensory activities! This easy playdough recipe not only encourages imagination, but it’s great for practicing coordination, fine motor skills and sensory learning (engaging our senses!). Want to read more about sensory play? You might enjoy this article.

5-minute homemade playdough
Ingredients
- 1 cup All purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
- food coloring of your choice
Instructions
- Add all ingredients into a medium sized pot. Once mixed smoothly, turn heat on to medium. Stir consistently (I like to use a wooden spoon) until playdough starts to thicken and come together into a ball. Turn off heat and dump playdough onto counter top. Carefully knead playdough until smooth and lump-free, and once cooled it's ready to play with!
How to store your 5-minute playdough so it will last:
Once the playdough has fully cooled, store in an airtight container or ziplock bag. The playdough will last for months this way! If playdough is left out, it will dry.
