Temps are dropping, the leaves are changing color, and today I am excited to share 15 Fall hygge ideas for home with you! Fall is truly a special and magical time of year.
I often wonder about all of the things I am missing during this beautiful season because of the everyday rush of life. There are so many simple joys to be found throughout Autumn time. Traditions, amazing food, a cozy feeling in our home, and nature’s stunning displays of vibrant colors all around.
What would you be doing if you had more time to slow down, relax and enjoy life’s more quiet pleasures? That my friend is where Hygge comes in!
Hygge (hoo-gah) is the Danish ritual of enjoying life’s simple pleasures. Friends and family, contentment, graciousness, good feelings, good food. A warm glow. A cozy feeling of home.
Hygge, to me, feels like what we would have time to enjoy if we weren’t constantly on the run, distracted, rushed or stressed. It’s those fleeting moments of our day that beg us to stay just a little longer to enjoy.
Today I want to share 15 Fall Hygge ideas for home to help encourage you to make space for more of these moments! Friends, life simply passes too quickly and we have to learn to slow down and enjoy it. I hope you find these ideas inspiring and helpful while you create the cozy feeling of Hygge in your home this Autumn season.
Without further ado, here are 15 ways you can make the season slow down and truly savor the moments of Fall!
1. Forage Natural Decor
There are SO many ways to decorate using foraged or natural elements in the Autumn months. Some of my favorites are pumpkins, branches (dead or with colorful leaves), dried florals or weeds (like burgundy dock), displaying seasonal fruit, or even creating your own cinnamon scented pine cones and cinnamon sticks.
2. Bake Fall desserts
Ah. Fall baking. My favorite time to make treats and goodies for my family of the whole year. There are so many delicious recipes to be made! Even if you are new to baking, you might enjoy trying this easy and quick cinnamon twist or these gourmet caramel apples, anyone can make them!
3. Family game or movie night
One of my all-time favorite Fall and Winter traditions we have is to make one of the weekend days our “pizza and game night”. We like to grab a pizza, and choose to either watch a movie or play games. We have loved checkers, monopoly, spot it, Yahtzee, Rummikub, or cards. This tradition has truly bonded us with our kids and invited a lot of fun moments and laughter into our home.
4. Add cozy textures around the house
An easy and inexpensive way to make your home feel instantly cozy is to add some throw pillows and warm blankets around the house. I love a good knit throw and we also recently purchased a couple of these heavy faux fur blankets that wash up so beautifully and stay new looking! They are so cozy to leave on the couch for our football or movie nights.
5. Add a hot drink station (Cocoa or Tea)
The kids always squeal with delight when they see me fill up our glass apothecary jars with drink mix like Pumpkin spice, Apple Cider and Hot Cocoa. I also love to fill a whole jar with these adorable and tasty little mini marshmallows. You can find all the details for how to make your own drink station IN THIS POST.
6. Make soup night once a week
Is there anything better to look forward to on a cold dark Autumn evening that a nice hearty pot of stew or vegetable minestrone? We love making one night a week our soup nights and having leftovers the next day is such a bonus. A few other soup ideas are Beef Stew, Bone Broth Chicken Noodle, or this Easy Chicken Tortilla.
7. Create cozy moments/vignettes or intentional areas around the house
It doesn’t cost a dime to create special moments or small vignettes around your home. Simply group a few special items together that evoke a feeling of coziness and refuge.
You can create unique vignettes on your coffee table by adding some seasonal touches, a candle, something with texture (metal, glass, wood), a vintage item with a story, or some books for guests to enjoy.
8. Display scarves for cozy and functional decor
I absolutely love using scarves to decorate in the Fall! They add instant cozy texture and pattern, and they are functional for the season. Hang them in your mudroom, drape over a couch arm or a bench or even place them on an entry table. Here are a few favorites!
9. Pumpkin recipes
Are you team apple or pumpkin when it comes to fall recipes? Either way, making and enjoying delicious recipes totally invites the feeling of Hyyge. Isn’t there something so special about smelling a baked treat in your oven? Below are 3 of my favorite pumpkin recipes, Old Fashioned Pumpkin Gingerbread cake, pumpkin bread, and my all-time favorite pumpkin sheet cake (or pumpkin bars).
10. Decorate your front porch
We love adding our home grown pumpkins to the porch each Fall. Last year I made a simple DIY fall project and added some fairy lights to some inexpensive lanterns. They added so much character to our display! Check out the details HERE.
11. Add twinkle lights
Adding candle light, lamps or twinkle lights may be one of my very favorite ways to Hygge in my home during the colder months. There is just something so welcoming, inviting and cozy about twinkle lights! Add them around the kitchen with candles, lanterns, a vase of branches with fairy lights, or place them around a floral display or on a mantel.
12. Use vintage or heirloom items in your decor
Do you have some thrifted, vintage, antique or heirloom items in your home? I love to incorporate them in my decorating! A couple of my very favorites to use is this beautiful stoneware bowl (my great-grandmother used to make bread in). And second, this cute little vintage truck I found for $3 at a garage sale. It is perfect for adding cinnamon sticks, baby boo pumpkins or a candle in. Heirloom pieces add a story and feeling to your home that is so special.
13. Do a fall DIY project, Craft or Add Art
Here are a couple of ideas for making a fall craft or adding beautiful art to any space. The image below shows a simple wall hanging I made from paper bags and a branch. I simply used brown paper bags and cut some leaf shapes, then glued them to a branch from the yard.
This DIY pumpkin vase was such a fun, easy and beautiful project to create! You can see all the details and tutorial in this post.
Last year I added this cute apple art to my kitchen and I also created this simple Raven printable for you guys! It’s so fun to add a bit of art to your fall or halloween decor. You can find this free printable HERE!
14. Bake something for a neighbor, teacher or friend
Here are a few of my favorite baked treats, perfect to make for your family or for a neighbor, teacher or friend! Just tap on the image for the recipe!
15. Light a Fall candle and slow down
Something about lighting a candle gives an instant feeling of Hygge! Flickering warm light and a scent of the season filling your home is just so cozy. Earlier this year I learned about this company that produces 100% soy candles, clean burning, paraffin free, made with essential oils, vegan and long burning. They are the only candles I will burn now!
